# Lone Attacker Uses AI-Assisted Workflows to Breach Large AWS Cloud Environment in 72 Hours (Sygnia Investigation)

> A single financially motivated threat actor compromised a large AWS-based enterprise environment in approximately 72 hours, chaining an initial internet-facing application weakness into an AWS access key, then abusing credential/secrets stores, CI/CD pipelines, container/serverless runtime, and databases to enumerate, escalate, and stage extortion — a pace Sygnia attributes to AI-assisted (agentic) tooling rather than a larger crew.

## Description

Sygnia's incident-response team investigated a cloud intrusion in which a lone attacker obtained an initial AWS IAM access key by exploiting a weakness in an internet-facing application, then rapidly expanded access across the victim's AWS estate. Rather than a slow, linear kill chain, investigators observed highly parallel, machine-speed activity: in one observed second, four separate access keys tied to four different AWS accounts were used from the same source IP address and the same user-agent string — a concurrency level investigators assess is effectively impossible to reconcile with a human operator typing commands manually. The attacker harvested credentials and secrets from ECS/EC2 environment variables, CI/CD runner environments (GitHub and Bitbucket), plaintext secrets stored in S3 buckets, application database API keys, AWS Secrets Manager, and AWS Systems Manager Parameter Store. Cloud enumeration covered IAM permissions, cloud service inventory, storage objects, and container/serverless resources. The actor executed several hundred unique SQL queries across dozens of RDS databases to rapidly map schemas and harvest user, transaction, and other sensitive records. CI/CD pipelines (GitHub/Bitbucket) were abused to inject malicious code into infrastructure-as-code templates and container images, with the attacker renaming branches and writing commit messages referencing 'pentest' and 'red team' activity to blend into legitimate-looking development workflows and evade analyst suspicion during triage. Persistence was established via newly created IAM users and access keys, reverse shells deployed on EC2/ECS compute, modified deployment files, and elevated application-level user accounts. For extortion leverage, the actor took reversible disruptive actions rather than deploying ransomware-style encryption: ECS services/containers were scaled to a maximum capacity of zero, SQS message queues were purged/manipulated, S3 bucket access was blocked, and network ACL rules were modified to cut off connectivity — demonstrating the capability to disrupt critical services without destroying data, then leveraging that capability for a financial extortion demand. Sygnia assessed AI-assisted or agentic-AI workflows accelerated reconnaissance, custom tool/script development, and command-and-control adaptation to the victim's specific environment, citing self-documenting attacker scripts bearing hallmarks of AI-generated code, and the sheer concurrency/speed of operations across many identities and services simultaneously. Sygnia's VP of Incident Response, Avi Dayan, noted that accessible large language models and agentic AI are lowering the barrier to entry for this class of sophisticated, fast-moving cloud attack. The case is referenced alongside a separate November 2025 incident in which a different actor achieved full AWS administrative control in roughly eight minutes, underscoring an emerging trend of AI-accelerated cloud compromise outpacing traditional detection-and-response timelines.
