# Anthropic Frontier Red Team research: small open-weight AI models approaching ability to self-replicate across consumer IoT devices (Android TV boxes)

> Anthropic's Frontier Red Team (published 2026-10-12) reports that small open-weight models may be months away from autonomously self-replicating on commercial IoT devices. In a simplified lab with unauthenticated ADB, only GLM-5.2 (30B+) achieved end-to-end propagation (8/8 nodes, 4/5 trials); this is a forward-looking research warning, not an in-the-wild campaign.

## Description

Anthropic's Frontier Red Team (authors William Zhou and Daniel Freeman) evaluated whether small AI models can set up inference servers on unfamiliar hardware, propagate across a device fleet and adapt through inherited notes, without datacenter access. The testbed used 15 off-brand Android TV boxes (about $55 each, 4GB RAM), GCP nodes running redroid (Android 15 emulator), Jetson Nanos, Macs and RTX 4090s. A custom harness called Memento, built on the Pi coding agent, kept notes on strategies and failures and passed workspace and documentation to successor instances (generational learning).

Results: Qwen3.5-9B could set up inference servers on hardware from Jetson Nanos to Macs and RTX 4090s (8 of 9 hardware types per BleepingComputer), and its success rate rose from 45% to 61-84% with generational learning. GLM-5.2 was the only model to achieve full end-to-end replication in the simplified cyber environment (unauthenticated ADB port), reaching all 8 nodes in 4 of 5 trials; other models failed at the composition stage. Even a 3B model reached about 50% of nodes in a 17-node propagation test with scripted inference setup. Access to a frontier advisor (Claude Opus 4.8) gave no significant improvement. Models were evaluated on setting up Llama3.1-8B inference rather than running themselves, on the rationale that a model with GLM-5.2's capability at 8B size would replicate successfully.

Gemma4-26B-A4B was distributed across the 15 TV boxes using pipeline parallelism (Petals-based sharding, 4-bit quantization) and ran at about 0.39 tokens/sec; full setup took 71-150 hours per device (Qwen3.5-9B: 28-51 hours). Anthropic estimates a replication doubling time of 1-2 days and projects that if small models keep improving at their historical rate (13.7 Epoch Capabilities Index points per year) they match this capability by the end of 2026. For a hypothetical Kimwolf-scale botnet of 2M devices, about 133,000 replicas (about 40 H100-equivalents of throughput) are estimated.

Limitations: the exploit stage was trivialised (no ADB authentication), no full end-to-end autonomous worm creation by small models was demonstrated, and small models scored poorly on spearphishing (CyberSecEval 3, 2.0-2.8/5.0). No CVEs, malware samples, network IOCs, threat actors or in-the-wild exploitation are reported. Defender guidance: detect multi-gigabyte model transfers and sustained inter-device inference traffic at ISP level, deploy honeypots to capture replicator harnesses, quarantine infected subscriber connections (ISP quarantine cleared 92% of Mirai infections in 14 days), and harden IoT defaults (e.g. UK requirement for non-default credentials).
